Chawton House's library collection brings together early works of women's literature produced primarily between 1600 and 1830. It includes rare early editions, some unique, alongside a wide collection of critical works.
The library collections of Chawton House can be accessed on-site by prior appointment. Year round we welcome academics in the field of early women’s writing, alongside members of the public who are interested in pursuing research. By bringing together both historic volumes and works of criticism ranging up to the present day, the collection enables original and secondary works on early women's literature to be studied side by side.
Our online catalogue lists all the books in our collection. To book a time to visit the library and request books to consult, sign up to become a Member. Instructions on how to request membership are listed on the Library page of our website. During your visit, your books will be brought to our Reading Room, where they can be safely handled under the supervision of staff.
