On the inside front cover of Volume I are the names in ink of eighteen contemporary subscribers to what is evidently a private 'Ladies Society' lending library. The first member is Lady Brooke, who received the book on November 3, 1827 and, over a year later, bought, or at any rate kept, the copy and inserted her husband's bookplates in each volume. A printed notice to the effect that members should forward the books more quickly is pasted on to the front endpaper.||(PHY) Accession no. 537: bound in a subscription library binding of contemporary half calf and blue-grey boards, spine number only.
