Description
(GEN) Subscriber's list and errata slip pasted to the back of the second leaf; Errata slip pasted to back of title page. A prefatory poem in Volume I bearing the note 'These lines were contributed by a literary friend of the authoress's' make it clear that the anonymous author was female. In this copy, as in the only copy recorded in the NUC, the title page of each volume has a small overpasted slip covering the London section of the imprint. This was presumably done either by the author or the printer. The suggestion is that in some way Longman withdrew from the publication. The plan for subscription (organized by Longman's?) may also have lapsed. The six page subscriber's list contains 186 names (including that of Joseph Banks) and 344 sets of the novel were subscribed for. The rarity of copies now suggests that a much smaller number were in fact produced.||(CON) Vol I; [A]6, B-L12, M6, Contents.
