In 1786 Sarah Trimmer, the educationalist and disciple of Madame de Genlis, established a Sunday school in Old brentford, which quickly boasted over 300 pupils. In 1787, the year Oeconomy of Charity was first published, she founded The Old Brentford Charity School, a weekday school of industry for girls. Her charity work became renowned and influenced the foundation of similar schools. The oeconomy of Charity encourages ladies to take responsibility for the education of their own children, and be charitable toward the education of children in need. The work argues the case for middle class and working class girls to be taught together and for rigorous religious education in general.
