Description
(CON) This is a manuscript volume containing many inserts, some gathered together by Montagu George Knight and William Austen-Leigh in compiling the genealogical history of the Knight Family. This includes the following families: Austen, Brodnax, May, Monke, Knatchbull, and Lewkenor.||(CON) The earliest written insert is dated 1606.||(BIN) Bound in red leather with gilt decoration and lettering.||(OWN) On loan from Mr Jeremy Knight, brother of Mr Richard Knight, owner of the Chawton Estate and Trustee of Chawton House Library (1989 -)||(RES) Compiled by Samuel Pegge. Samuel Pegge(1704ñ1796), Church of England clergyman and antiquary, was born on 5 November 1704 in Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Pegge became vicar of Godmersham, also in Kent, in December 1731 and this preferment prompted him to marry. In Kent Pegge developed his antiquarian interests, collecting books and coins, corresponding with like-minded contemporaries, researching, and writing. After his wife's death in July 1746, he decided to move to his native Derbyshire and in 1747.
