Description
(CON) Containing verse on family matters written between 1744 and 1785 by Elizabeth Sarah Wilmot, of Farnborough Park, Hampshire. Elizabeth Sarah Wilmot (nee Morris) would appear to be a hitherto unrecorded eighteenth-century female poet. She is mentioned in the collected correspondence of David Garrick, and one poem here (deleted) is headed 'From Mr. Garrick to M. Wilmot on Doctor Cadogans abusing Shakespeare.' Copied neatly, some with alterations, another hand adding explanatory comments on names referred to in poems. Three booklets, together with a 19th century illustrated family travel journal and some other literary drafts and narratives. (BIN) Three manuscript notebooks have marbled paper wrappers, the letters are loose sheets, the travel journal is bound in tan calf and contains loose sheets of both autograph text and illustrations. There are 3 portraits enclosed: Sir Robert Christopher of Alford, Co. Lincoln; Henry Jenkins, who live to the surprising age of 169 years; as well as a photographic reproduction of a portrait of two unidentified women. All are contained in an archival box of blue board. (REF) A biographical introduction to the author and some digitised portions from the manuscript are included in the online exhibition 'Sarah Wilmot, Forgotten Bluestocking' [https://sarahwilmot.omeka.net/exhibits/show/elizabeth-sarah-wilmot, accessed 10th January 2022]; detailed cataloguing of contents included in searchable database 'Manuscript Verse Miscellanies 1700-1820' [https://dhil.lib.sfu.ca/mvm/manuscript/391/, accessed 10th January 2022].
